Vs South Bucks Comets (24/01/10)

The U18 had their strongest team of the season so far, but clearly a 9am start was too early for some players! Drafting in two U16 players and an U14 player meant that the Scorpions started with the full complement of players. Although an early adrenalin rush ensured that the first quarter ended even at 6-6, Shenley were only able to add 4 further points in the following 3 quarters. Encouragingly the team had only 1 turnover in the first quarter, whilst hitting 3 of 5 shots. With speculation over various players’ Saturday night exploits, the play became increasingly sluggish, with the Scorpions turning the ball over 20 times in the final 3 quarters. This, combined with a lack of boxing out defensively and poor scoring, meant that the Comets ran out comfortable 18 point winners. Despite the negatives the team were unlucky with shots just not dropping. Greg Loftman tried in vain to lift the team by scoring 2 of the 5 baskets, and pulling off 4 steals. Tom Papworth and Mo Soluade both tried to rally the troops by contributing with 6 and 4 rebounds respectively. The game finished with a final score of 28 – 10 to the Comets.

Top Scorer: Greg Loftman (4).

Vs Beds Knights (24/01/10)

A much stronger performance followed against an under-strength Beds Knights team (only 5 players ensured the Scorpions started with a 10 point lead). Turnovers were reduced to 15, rebounds almost doubled compared to the first game and scoring improved to 21 points. Although a bit sluggish getting back defensively, and boxing out work still in need of further improvement, it was a much better effort. Although Sanjay Tara was struggling with food poisoning, he managed to finish top scorer with 6pts. U16 call-up Will Townsend warrants a mention for out-rebounding most of the team with 7 rebounds including 3 offensive rebounds in one quarter. Tom Papworth commanded the boards with 8 total rebounds, as well as contributing 4 points. The Knights showed that their superior fitness level, with their 5 players out running the Shenley players towards the end of the game. Mo Soluade had a good all round game, providing 2 blocks, 2 steals, and 2 rebounds to go with his 2 points. Luke Townsend playing against players 5 years older than himself managed to get to the free throw line and convert our only free throw of the day. Whilst the Scorpions won the game 31- 24, the Knights have to be commended for playing with only 5 players and a 10 point deficit at the start.

Top Scorers: Sanjay Tara (6), Thomas Papworth (4), Toby Osobu (4).
