Scorpions U14 Mixed - End Regular Season on a high - March 7 2010
Vs Hertfordshire Warriors 2 - In their final game of the regular season the Scorpions U14 team put on a confident all-around display of team defence and offensive execution. Coming off a disappointing second loss of the season after the difficult weekend of car accidents and injuries during their previous visit the team were determined to prove that they are a force to be reckoned with at full strength, and they did not disappoint. Doing an excellent job of not just settling for open shots but working for the best shot the team really shared the scoring load and looked like a changed group from the previous two outings. Really pulling together as a group and demonstrating that they can think for themselves in the game and do not have to rely on restrictive plays to win games. A very impressive and resounding victory over the team which sat at the top of the League Tables prior to the encounter the game ended 43 - 16 to the Scorpions. This left the Scorpions in a 3-way tie for second place, clinching it on points difference. AGS Hornets finished first with the Scorpions handing them their only defeat of the season.

Top Scorers: Dickson Izediunor (10), Luke Townsend (7), Luke Yates (6) Full Stats: U14 Mixed Vs Herts Warriors 2 07-03-2010

Vs Aylesbury Dux (QF2) - In their Playoff Qualifier the Scorpions faced Aylesbury Dux who finished in 7th place. Continuing their solid display of team-work the Scorpions lead out of the gate and never looked back in this one. For the first game of the season every player in the team got on the score sheet with several of the quieter players on the squad stepping up and contributing such as Max Caswell's confident debut display at Point Guard in the 3rd quarter and Alex Casimir's (long overdue) improved shooting form. With a season-low 3 turnovers it really seems that the team has learned not to panic on the ball and to let the game come to them more on the offensive end. The Free-throw shooting percentage was unfortunately quite low for this game and there is still a lack of boxing-out on the defensive end. Having said that the defence really clicked as a unit today in both games as players took personal pride in keeping their man to man defensive positioning and stepped up to support their teammates on the weak side. The fast break really was clicking today and it is reflected in the final score of 69 - 6 in Scorpions favour. The Scorpions will now face Hertfordshire Warriors 1 in the Playoff Semi-Finals in their quest to prove themselves as the strongest U14 team in Buckinghamshire.

Top Scorers: Dickson Izediunor (19), Nathan Bramble (10), Luke Yates (8) Full Stats: U14 Mixed Vs Aylesbury Dux (QF2) 07-03-2010

Scorpions U18 Boys - 'Early Start Too Early?' - January 25 2010
Vs South Bucks Comets (24/01/10) - The U18 had their strongest team of the season so far, but clearly a 9am start was too early for some players! Drafting in two U16 players and an U14 player meant that the Scorpions started with the full complement of players. Although an early adrenalin rush ensured that the first quarter ended even at 6-6, Shenley were only able to add 4 further points in the following 3 quarters. Encouragingly the team had only 1 turnover in the first quarter, whilst hitting 3 of 5 shots. With speculation over various players' Saturday night exploits, the play became increasingly sluggish, with the Scorpions turning the ball over 20 times in the final 3 quarters. This, combined with a lack of boxing out defensively and poor scoring, meant that the Comets ran out comfortable 18 point winners. Despite the negatives the team were unlucky with shots just not dropping. Greg Loftman tried in vain to lift the team by scoring 2 of the 5 baskets, and pulling off 4 steals. Tom Papworth and Mo Soluade both tried to rally the troops by contributing with 6 and 4 rebounds respectively. The game finished with a final score of 28 - 10 to the Comets.

Top Scorer: Greg Loftman (4). Full Stats: U18 Boys Vs South Bucks 24-01-10

Vs Beds Knights (24/01/10) - A much stronger performance followed against an under-strength Beds Knights team (only 5 players ensured the Scorpions started with a 10 point lead). Turnovers were reduced to 15, rebounds almost doubled compared to the first game and scoring improved to 21 points. Although a bit sluggish getting back defensively, and boxing out work still in need of further improvement, it was a much better effort. Although Sanjay Tara was struggling with food poisoning, he managed to finish top scorer with 6pts. U16 call-up Will Townsend warrants a mention for out-rebounding most of the team with 7 rebounds including 3 offensive rebounds in one quarter. Tom Papworth commanded the boards with 8 total rebounds, as well as contributing 4 points. The Knights showed that their superior fitness level, with their 5 players out running the Shenley players towards the end of the game. Mo Soluade had a good all round game, providing 2 blocks, 2 steals, and 2 rebounds to go with his 2 points. Luke Townsend playing against players 5 years older than himself managed to get to the free throw line and convert our only free throw of the day. Whilst the Scorpions won the game 31- 24, the Knights have to be commended for playing with only 5 players and a 10 point deficit at the start.

Top Scorers: Sanjay Tara (6), Thomas Papworth (4), Toby Osobu (4). Full Stats: U18 Boys Vs Beds Knights 24-01-10

Scorpions U14 Mixed - 'Mixed Results on difficult day' - January 19 2010
Vs Aylesbury Dux - The Scorpions U14 Mixed team lead from the start in what was very much a one-sided affair in their first game. Of particular note in this game were Nathan Bramble hitting on 5 of 7 shots from the field for a 71% shooting percentage, Dickson Izediunor recording a double-double with 11 points and 11 steals and Luke Yates who hit a season high 14 points in his debut at point guard. Particularly pleasing in this game was the fact that everyone in the team got plenty of shooting opportunities, even those who tend to struggle to get their shot off. Hopefully this experience has shown those who tend to lack offensive aggressiveness that they need to get involved more in the offense. The game ended with a score of 41- 5.

Top Scorers: Luke Yates (14), Dickson Izediunor (11), Nathan Bramble (11). Full Stats: U14 Mixed Vs Aylesbury Dux 17-01-10

Vs South Bucks Comets - In their second game the Scorpions started down by 5 points due to the absence of Luke Townsend who was unfortunately involved in a car accident on the way to the games. The team started off very sluggishly in this game and our lack of a true point guard really showed as we piled on the turnovers and generally looked disorganised and static on offense. It was a frustrating game to coach as the effort really wasn't there for much of the game across the team. When the team did finally start to respond to the challenge late in the third quarter it was a race against the clock and with far too many easy layups missed and literally zero offensive rebounds the Scorpions really made it hard on themselves. A very tough loss but plenty to take away from this game. Our hustle and poise has to remain in place, even when we are behind and we have to fight for loose balls on both ends of the court. However, with things in perspective we were just glad that the two serious car crashes that two of our team members experienced that morning did not result in any severe injuries. Special mention from this game goes to Justin Thornhill for showing a lot of heart in making it to the second game after his accident and also for Luke and his mum who we all wish a speedy recovery. The game ended with a final score of 21 - 31 to South Bucks Comets.

Top Scorers: Dickson Izediunor (8), Nathan Bramble (6), Justin Thornhill (4). Full Stats: U14 Mixed Vs South Bucks Comets 17-01-10

U14 & U16 Scorpions put on good showing at Xmas Tournament - December 21 2009
After a long day of basketball yesterday at Shenley Brook End the Scorpions U16 and U14 teams have a lot to be proud of! The tournament offered the teams the opportunity to gain plenty of game experience and everyone really rose to the challenge.

The Scorpions U14 Mixed team put on a strong showing beating a young MK Lions U13s convincingly in both encounters and winning one of out of two against an MK Speederz squad containing a couple of very promising young players. The U14s then met MK Speederz again in the final and while they performed admirably were always playing catch-up after a slow start and with a lot of contact being allowed under the basket just didn't seem to be getting the calls and ended as Runners-Up.

The Scorpions U16 Boys team started poorly losing their first game to the Lions, they then rebounded in their next game and defeated the MK Speederz convincingly although still looking a little bit shaky. After some work on their help-defense they put on a much improved showing in their second encounter with the Lions but still came up short and this time came up short against MK Speederz. With MK Speederz losing to the Lions it went down to points difference and Scorpions made it through to the final against MK Lions where they put on incredible demonstrations of hustle on defence and smooth ball-movement on offence, finding the open shot and playing smart, going into the first half down by 1 point but looking like the much stronger side. However the team seemed to run out of ideas towards the end and after rotating the bench well also ended the tournament as Runners-Up.

All in all it was an enjoyable day for those that participated, many of whom were playing in their first competitive games for Scorpions. Obviously the tournament clashed with the last APC training session before the upcoming Sweden tour so several of our strongest players were not available but this really helped others have the opportunity to step up (special mention to Will Townsend for a confident debut at Point Guard for the U16 Boys). Well done to everyone and Merry Xmas!

Scorpions U18 Boys - '2 Games Forfeited for first time ever!' - December 14 2009
Unfortunately due to National League commitments with Bucks Hornets, work commitments and what appears to be a general lack of commitment from other players the Scorpions U18 Boys were forced to forfeit both of their Bucks Basketball League games this past weekend. This was very disappointing both for the club in general but more specifically for the volunteers involved with this team as the club has never had to forfeit games in the past. It is worth stressing here that coaches and team managers are all volunteers and are likely to feel quite let down when they have to forfeit games after all the effort they put in for the team.

All U18 Boys players are expected to commit themselves 100% both at training and to games from this point forward. All players have been issued with a Bucks Basketball League 2009-2010 Schedule and are expected to give their coaches plenty of notice for any games they cannot attend. Hopefully this situation will not be repeated again and we get back to our positive ways.

Scorpions U14 Mixed - 'Hitting their stride' - December 6 2009
Vs Fulbrook School (06/12/09) - The Scorpions U14 Mixed team never really struggled in this game, racking the points up early finishing the first quarter ahead 11-3. This domination continued in the second scoring 19 unanswered points to enter half-time ahead 32-4. With a comfortable lead established the emphasis was on improving on our offensive execution and defensive focus. While the whole team got involved, and all but two players made it onto the score sheet, Luke Townsend lead from the front, recording a 'double-double' (double digits in two categories), but more than scoring he demonstrated great leadership in encouraging the team to keep up the intensity and work on our weaknesses. Special mention also goes to Jordan McCarthy and Daniel Ricketts who played their first ever games for Scorpions, both doing well in their debuts and making it onto the scoresheet. The game finished with a final score of 56 - 11.

Top Scorers: Luke Townsend (18), Nathan Bramble (10). Full Stats: U14 Mixed Vs Fulbrook_School 06-12-09

Vs Chiltern (06/12/09) - In their second game the Scorpions were slow out of the blocks as they attempted to continue fine-tuning their offense Chiltern surged ahead and finished the first quarter ahead 6-12. With a renewed focus and a target of going into half-time ahead a spirited second five came out with much improved defensive intensity, and with frequent fastbreak opportunities achieved their goal, ending the quarter up 20-15. While the offensive execution still needs work their were plenty of signs of the team gelling together and understanding their assignments. However, coming away from this game, and indeed the first, the team will have to focus on improving their free-throw percentage and their rebounding as we really suffered in these areas. The final score was never very close, ending at 37-17, but Chiltern really tested the team in the first quarter and will give us plenty to think about before our next fixtures.

Scorpions U12 Mixed - 'Fighting fit!' - December 2 2009
Vs South Bucks Comets (29-11-09) - After a couple of tough training sessions the young Scorpions were ready to play hard and they delivered. Having played South Bucks once already the Scorpions were about thrown off by their new line up. This new team played hard through out but the scorpions took an early lead and dominated throughout. With all players getting involved, cutting, making space and attempting shots the score reflected the hard team work that was shown. The game ended 32-15 to the Scorpions!

Top Scorers: Setemi Omoyeni (10), Jordan Edgell (8). Full stats: U12 Mixed Vs South Bucks Comets 29-11-09

Vs Chiltern (29-11-09) - The U12 Mixed Scorpions had another tremendous game against Chiltern. Dominating from the start Scorpions took an early lead with the first quarter ending 10-7. It was another spectacular show of team work with the Scorpions raking up a total of 4 assists in the 3rd quarter. Fighting signs of fatigue strength was shown as they battled through to an impressive victory of 44 - 11. An amazing game by Scorpions U12 Mixed team, lets hope we can keep this up and earn a top ranking play off spot.

Scorpions U16 Boys - 'Without a Sting' - November 25 2009
Vs South Bucks Comets (22-11-09) - After a promising start to the season the under 16 boys were unable to defend their winning streak. The Scorpions won the tip & started the game looking like they meant business; unfortunately a cohesive Comets team soon took control ending the first quarter up 15-4. In the second quarter Scorpions showed stronger defence, but still finishing 21-9 down. Throughout the game Scorpions seemed to lack the energy & drive they showed in their first game of the season. In the final half of the game, due to a slack and quiet defence the team gave away some easy baskets. South Bucks' defence managed to deny most Scorpions attempts to work the ball inside the key, and therefore some long range, low percentage shots were taken with little success. The game ended 15-39 to South Bucks Comets. We know we can do better, lots to work on before the next game the team can look forward to some challenging fitness sessions!!.

Top Scorers: Kian Vizari (9), Kamisi Fawehimni (5). Full Stats: U16 Boys Vs South Bucks Comets 22-11-09

Vs AGS Hornets (22-11-09) - AGS conceded the game, despite having a full team they did not have player registration cards meaning that even a friendly match was out of the question.

Author: Charlie Townsend

Scorpions U18 Boys - 'Still a lot of work to do' - November 16 2009
Vs South Bucks Comets (15-11-09) - The South Bucks Comets started the game with a 5pt deficit due to only having 9 players. However the Comets got off to a good start by scoring 10 unanswered points in the first quarter. The Scorpions were a little unlucky though, as they managed to work the ball inside numerous times, but the close shots just wouldn't fall. Within only five U18 squad members available for the game, it was then down to four U16 players and even one U14 player (Luke Townsend) to see what they could do in the 2nd quarter. Unfortunately they didn't fare much better with only Cameron Thomas managing to score a single field goal towards the end of the quarter to finish the half 19-2 down. After the half time break, the team showed a bit more composure with Tom Papworth scoring 6 points and Cameron Thomas adding the only other basket. The Comets were too strong on the day winning 33 - 14.

Top Scorers: Thomas Papworth (6), Cameron Thomas (3). Full Stats: U18 Boys Vs South Bucks Comets 15-11-09

Vs AGS Hornets (15-11-09) - AGS only had 4 players, so the game was officially scored as a Scorpions win. However, AGS managed to recruit an extra player in order to play a "friendly" game. Scorpions were looking to improve on a lack of scoring in the first game. The team came out a lot more fired up and energetic led by Greg Loftman. The Scorpions started slowly only scoring 4pts in the first quarter. The "friendly" nature of the game seemed to infiltrate everyone, including the refs who let a lot go, with Scorpions unlucky not to get more fouls called. As the game progressed, the Scorpions managed to cut down on turnovers which, in turn, led to more shot attempts and more points. With 6 players getting on the score sheet, it was a lot better effort from the whole team but in the end AGS were too strong running out 14pt winners, 35 - 21.

Scorpions U12 Mixed - 'Two wins but plenty to work on' - November 10 2009
Vs Hertfordshire Warriors (8-11-09) - The Scorpions U12 Mixed team started 10 points down in their first game of the season due to having less than 10 players. Struggling to catch up to the Hertfordshire Warriors 10 point start the Scorpions seemed unable to finish, ending the 1st quarter down 12-4. After a quick team talk in the 2nd quarter the brave Scorpions came out fighting with experienced players like Luke Townsend racking up the scores but it still wasnt enough to gain the lead ending the quarter 16-12. In the second half a new team seemed to hit floor conceding no baskets the Scorpions won 16-28.

Top Scorers: Luke Townsend (16), Setemi Omoyeni (4). Full Stats: U12 Mixed Vs Herts Warriors 8-11-09

Vs South Bucks Comets (08-11-09) - The 2nd game of the day seemed to be a completely different story. This time is was the Scorpions turn to start with a 10 point lead and from that moment there was no turning back. Lead by Jordan Edgell and Luke Townsend the Scorpions U12 Mixed team dominated ending the game in a 6-50 win. Though sprits were high after winning both games the Scorpions still have a long way to go until they are the best team they can possibly be.

Top Scorers: Luke Townsend (12), Setemi Omoyeni (6), Jordan Edgell (6), Alex Mould (6). Full Stats: U12 Mixed Vs South Bucks Comets 8-11-09

Scorpions U14 Mixed - 'Strong Start to Season' - October 18 2009
Vs AGS (18-10-09) - The Scorpions U14 Mixed team had a strong start in their first game of the Bucks Basketball League Season. Facing an undermanned Aylesbury Grammar School the team started ahead by 10 points and never looked back as they went into the half ahead 28-9 on the back of some excellent team defence and some superb rebounding from new addition Nathan Bramble leading to plenty of fastbreak baskets. With a comfortable lead established everyone enjoyed plenty of court time and the team put a lot of work into perfecting this seasons new offensive strategies. Scorpions eventually won with a final score of 53-16.

Top Scorers: Dickson Izediunor (13), Luke Townsend (8), Jordan Edgell (6). Full Stats: U14 Mixed Vs AGS 18-10-09

Vs Herfordshire Warriors (18-10-09) - In their second game the Scorpions again started ahead by 10 points but this time faced a tough Hertfordshire Warriors 1 team who, with a significant height advantage, dominated the first quarter scoring 9 unanswered points. This scoring drought for Scorpions lasted until deep into the second quarter with the Scorpions offense looking worryingly static trailing at half-time with a score of 12-21. After some encouragement the team went into the 3rd quarter with some fire and finally started to box-out on the defensive end and gain more rebounds leading to several fast break points, a renewed confidence, a much improved half-court offense and a more passionate bit of team defense. While Herts Warriors 1 eventually won the day this was not before Alex Casimir managed to beat the buzzer with his first ever 3 pointer! The final score was 30-37.

Scorpions U16 Boys - 'Do Dux Double' - October 14 2009
Vs Aylesbury Dux (11-10-09) - Scorpions U16 Boys made a promising start in their first game of the Bucks Basketball League 2009-2010 Season. After a slow defensive start, the Scorpions ended the first quarter down 2-6 to the Dux, but then came back strong in the second quarter with some good defence to end the second 13-6 in the Scorpions favour. Dux continued to put up a fight throughout the next two quarters, but the Scorpions continued to play tough defence and moved the ball creating lots of gaps in the Dux defence allowing drives to the basket and high percentage shots. Scorpions went onto win the game with a final score of 28-16.

Top Scorers: Will Townsend (8), Kian Vaziri (7). Full Stats: U16 Boys Vs Aylesbury Dux (1)

Vs Aylesbury Dux (11-10-09) - After the success of their first game against the Dux, the Scorpions U16 Boys went in to their second game against them very confidently. Continuing from where they left off and dominating the game for the first two quarters, ending the second quarter 20-6 to the Scorpions. During the 3rd and 4th quarters they showed some signs of fatigue when getting back on defence enabling the Dux to make a couple of easy baskets. However, Scorpions came out on top with the end score of 38-17.

Scorpions U18 Boys - 'Stirred but not Shaken!' - October 5 2009
Vs AGS Hornets (04-10-09) - Scorpions U18 Boys were slow to start in their first game of the Bucks Basketball League 2009-2010 Season, conceding 7 points for no reply finishing the quarter 15-10 down but rallying round in the second to reduce the lead to 3 points (24-21). The superior fitness levels of AGS, however, continued to be an over-riding factor and they won the day 50-34 despite spirited efforts by the whole team.

Top Scorers: Morayo Soluade (6), Tom Clarke (5), Brendan Clarke (5). Full Stats: U18 Boys Vs AGS 04-10-09

Vs Herfordshire Warriors (04-10-09) - Not to be dis-heartened Shenley started strongly in the next game against the Herts Warriors finishing the first half tied at 18. Fatigue again took its toll, however, leading to poorer defence with Herts capitalising and Scorpions failing to run the fast break, instead resorting to long shots and turnovers. The game ended 40-28 in favour of Hertfordshire Warriors but with newcomers Tom Clarke and Gareth Hesford performing well on their debut the entire team can look forward to working hard in the coming weeks to consolidate on existing levels of skill and fitness.
