About Rob:

Shenley was where it all started for me; I joined when I was 9! I still remember my very first session, it was a happy and fun environment and I knew I wanted to continue to go every week. As I got older and worked my way through the age groups the emphasis became more competitive and focused on developing individual skills combined with a strong team concept. Because of the hard work the coaching staff put into the sessions I was able to improve so much throughout my time at the club. The coaches are always willing to put the work in, whether it’s on or off the court, to make Shenley a great club in which players can learn and develop.

From Shenley I made the
Milton Keynes junior team, then the Bucks County team, the South West regional team and from there I was selected to the England U16 National team. If it wasn't for Shenley I wouldn’t have got the opportunity to represent my country and so I owe a lot to the club for making me the player I am today.

September 2008: My first month as a Flyer!

Well... moving away from home went much more smoothly than I anticipated. Things were definitely a lot easier for me with Richard being here and making the move with Ire as well. Along with us three in the house there is Pulina, he goes to university at U.W.E and also there is Brody who is from Canada who is playing for the Flyers Division 1 team this season. Already we all get on really well and there’s always a good atmosphere in the house.

As far as everyday life is concerned it was a big change to what I’m used to. Being here really emphasises just how much my mum did for me in M.K. I’m starting to adjust to life here and enjoying the responsibilities and independence. I feel like already I’m getting into a routine and I could see things only getting easier.

I started college at the beginning of the month; I’m doing a national diploma in sport and exercise science. So far so good, but I’ve only been here a month so if I was behind in work already I would be seriously worried! I’ve made a few friends already in my class; most people are in an academy of some sort so we all have a common interest in sports.
The basketball side of things is going really well. I started training straight away with the Division 1 team. I found it really hard at first, but I’m slowly but surely adjusting to the physicality and the intensity of it. I’m also playing for the U18’s and the U22’s (which is the Division 4 team made up of mostly juniors and the
College Academy team). I’m training around 10 times a week with as much as three sessions a day. It’s taking a lot out of me especially at the beginning I felt physically drained and found it hard to cope with all the sessions but after a couple weeks when I got familiar with the routine and everything became much easier.

Even though the season hasn’t started for any teams yet I’ve already played quit a lot of games, my first game as a Flyer was a pre season tournament in
Taunton with the Division 1 team. It was a great experience and Andreas, the Head Coach gave me quite a lot of minutes to see how I would cope at this level. I think he was happy with how I performed as he has kept me with the Division 1 team.

I’m really happy about my decision to come here and already after just one month I have seen improvements in my game, especially my shooting. I’m really excited to get the season started. It’s going to be a very busy year for me but I’m looking forward to it. I’m going to push myself as hard as I can to become a better player because I know that I need to make the most of this opportunity and if I put in the effort in the coaches will help me get to the next level.

School is going to get a lot harder with assignments being set in the next couple weeks so will be interesting how I juggle all the work with training, but I know that if I structure my time properly I can get the most out of both school and basketball.

I’ll keep you posted, bring on October.
I’m out. Peaceee! x
