About Richard:

“I played basketball for Shenley for 6 years from 2001-2007. I first joined when I was 11 years old, it was my first time playing basketball and Shenley was a great place to get started with lots of fantastic people running a friendly club. Throughout my time at Shenley I was able to improve my game a huge amount. I was lucky enough to be part of hugely successful teams winning the Bucks Junior Basketball League four times in total and also the Bucks Junior Basketball League Playoffs twice. My most memorable season was at U13's where we won the Bucks league and playoffs for the first time and did it undefeated!”

Oct, Nov, Dec 2008: First half of the season has flown by!

Well I just got back from my last game of 2008! The first half of the season has really gone stupidly fast. So far it’s been a mixed season as far as success, but definitely more good than bad. But I will talk about wins and losses in a bit. I have just last week completed my ‘SATS’ which is the American equivalent to A-Levels and is needed to get into US colleges. I thought I would get this part done early and then I will have to look at applying later through college coaches once I have got more game footage together (in order to get a basketball scholarship to colleges in the USA most players film themselves playing to send it to coaches). I should receive my results within the next week or two so hopefully I score a 1500+ which is seen as a good score by colleges.  Apart from that I have had one injury that kept me out for roughly a month as I strained my groin pretty bad, at first the physiotherapist thought it was a hernia but I was lucky to find out that the surgeon could not feel it and that I would not need surgery (which would have kept me out a further 2 months).

U18 Bristol Flyers (South West Premier) League - 3 wins, 2 losses

For the U18s we had a real bad start losing our first two games to tough Solent and Reading teams both games by 20+, since then things have gone really well we won 3 straight games and now have a record of 3-2. Really there is a big gap in our league with 3 very strong teams and then the rest of the league , however when we are playing at our best I feel we can compete and even beat the top 3 teams in our league. In the national cup we advanced 2 rounds but then got knocked out in the last 16 to a strong Solihull team who we are still yet to play in our league.

Bristol Flyers II (EBL Division Four South West) League – 6 wins, 1 loss

This has been the most successful team out of all the Bristol flyers clubs so far. The team has 6 wins and only 1 loss and is top of the league. The team is really strong and is looking to get promoted to Division 3 after this season. The one loss came at our time where we had a weakened squad through injury. I have missed a few games for this team because of commitments to the other teams but I should be playing a lot more games for them next year.

Bristol Academy Flyers (British colleges etc)

We haven’t really had many college games except from a few local colleges but no real academy competition yet. We did however qualify for the British colleges championships next April by winning the South West Regional Tournament earlier this month. It will be at this tournament we really get to play the other top academies such as Hackney etc.

Bristol Academy Flyers (EBL Division one) League – 4 wins, 2 losses

The Flyers are also off to a good start. Since the real season has begun I haven’t really seen much court time, however training is really challenging me and suiting up gives me a good experience and lets me know why I have to work to improve every session and prove I can play at that level. I think things are going well and I feel I have a good chance to enter the rotation towards the second half of the season.

Well that’s it for me until 2009; I’m looking forward to having the Christmas break to get a bit of time to relax and also see the rest of my family. Until then have a good Christmas and a happy new year!

Richard
